Who We Are?

Who are we?

We are The Speak Up Podcast, a mental health awareness platform that aims to reduce stigma around mental illness in the UK and beyond.

We give people a voice on our platform to talk about the things that matter to them; to debunk misconceptions and challenge stereotypes. Please see our mission below for more...

Our Mission

Our Mission is to empower you with a voice, to challenge stigma, and reshape public opinion around mental health.

We will do this by providing a safe, inclusive space for contributors to start something now; always acting with good judgement to support the integrity of those we represent.

Together, we hope to create a lasting positive impact on the conversation around mental health.

Greetings from the host

Our Core Values

We have a set of core values that we believe embody what we want to achieve in our mission & what we believe is the way towards our vision.

  • We lead with Authenticity

    We tell it how it is. This is about been real. Without this we are unable to make real change and progress towards greater understanding. We need to be seen through our true self.

  • We promote inclusivity

    Despite our differences we are united in our struggles. Regardless of our background, race, disability or otherwise, we all unite towards a common goal. We celebrate this! This is a safe space for all...

  • We uphold integrity

    We uphold and maintain integrity while representing the communities we serve. This means doing as we say; been responsible about what content we publish & acting in good faith for others wellbeing.

  • Safety comes first - always!

    As a mental health podcast we have a social, ethical and moral responsibility to act for the benefit and safety of fellow humans. This means we will act to safeguard vulnerable persons on our podcast; listeners or participants. We will not tolerate putting others in danger or inappropriate behaviour that causes upset to others. See our safeguarding policy for more on this.

  • Start Something Now!

    Start now with whatever resources you have. We don't believe in perfection so don't let this prevent you from starting. As they say 'a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single first step'.

    What this means for us as a platform is we won't let finite resource stop us or make excuses to not carry out our mission.

Our Vision

We hope that our mission and consistent action in our core values will:

Create a world where mental health is openly discussed, respected and accepted - not just tolerated.

We believe that by giving people a platform, to share their stories and experiences, we can help to reduce stigma around mental health & encourage an environment of understanding and acceptance.

Ultimately, we wish to change attitudes through education.

General Policies

We have a series of general guiding principles we follow set out in these policies:

Safeguarding

We have a duty of care to protect those who participate or listen on our platform. We will not tolerate any harassment, abuse, or inappropriate behaviour that causes alarm, distress or harm to another. Such behaviour will be reported to Police, social media providers and content will be blocked, restricted and censored to prevent harm to vulnerable persons.

Data Protection

This relates to data handling, stowing, processing and how we record information and protect it. We adhere to GDPR regulations as set out in Article 5 (1)

“(a) processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner in relation to individuals (‘lawfulness, fairness and transparency’);

(b) collected for specified, explicit and legitimate purposes and not further processed in a manner that is incompatible with those purposes; further processing for archiving purposes in the public interest, scientific or historical research purposes or statistical purposes shall not be considered to be incompatible with the initial purposes (‘purpose limitation’);

(c) adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which they are processed (‘data minimisation’);

(d) accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date; every reasonable step must be taken to ensure that personal data that are inaccurate, having regard to the purposes for which they are processed, are erased or rectified without delay (‘accuracy’);

(e) kept in a form which permits identification of data subjects for no longer than is necessary for the purposes for which the personal data are processed; personal data may be stored for longer periods insofar as the personal data will be processed solely for archiving purposes in the public interest, scientific or historical research purposes or statistical purposes subject to implementation of the appropriate technical and organisational measures required by the GDPR in order to safeguard the rights and freedoms of individuals (‘storage limitation’);

(f) processed in a manner that ensures appropriate security of the personal data, including protection against unauthorised or unlawful processing and against accidental loss, destruction or damage, using appropriate technical or organisational measures (‘integrity and confidentiality’).”
